Email is now a fast and increasingly popular means of communication. However, its use is not without consequences for the environment. Did you know that an email without an attachment generates 4 grams of CO2, compared to 11 grams for an email with a 1 MB attachment and up to 50 grams for a long email with several attachments ?
Try to reduce the number of emails you send. For example, there is no point in sending emails to your colleague if he or she is in the next room. And if you need to keep a paper trail, consider compacting your email to limit its weight and therefore its carbon footprint.
Go through your inbox and look for emails you no longer wish to receive. Most emails have an unsubscribe link at the bottom that you can click to stop receiving them.
Sort your inbox by date and delete any emails that are no longer relevant. This can include old newsletters, promotional emails and other types of spam.
If you need to keep old emails for reference, but don’t want them to clutter up your inbox, you can archive them. This way, the emails will no longer be in your inbox, but they will still be easily searchable if you need to find them later.
As well as reducing your carbon footprint, regular cleaning of your mailbox will help you to be better organised, reduce stress and improve your productivity. By taking these simple steps, you can help protect our planet.
So go ahead, take care of your mailbox and the environment !
